Job Description
Hi there! I’m Brad, General Counsel at Customer.io, and I’m looking for an amazing Associate General Counsel to join our growing legal team and help us build a scalable, business-enabling legal department that keeps pace with our rapid growth. In this role, you’ll be the go-to partner for our product, sales, marketing, and business development teams—providing practical, strategic legal advice and crafting processes that empower us to move quickly while maintaining robust compliance and governance. If you’re passionate about shaping legal frameworks in a fast-paced SaaS environment and thrive on collaborating across functions to solve complex challenges, we’d love to hear from you!
Some things you’ll do
- Lead commercial negotiations end-to-end. You’ll negotiate, draft, and execute a variety of agreements—SaaS contracts, strategic partnerships, procurement deals, and data protection agreements—ensuring our commercial arrangements protect Customer.io’s interests and scale as we grow.
- Advise on product and technology risks. Partner closely with product, engineering, and marketing to surface and mitigate regulatory and legal risks tied to new technologies, especially around data privacy compliance and responsible AI use.
- Own and evolve privacy and security compliance programs. Collaborate with InfoSec to enhance our GDPR, CCPA, and HIPAA compliance efforts—developing policies, leading training sessions, and conducting audits to keep us ahead of evolving requirements.
- Support corporate governance. Help prepare board materials, manage equity-related matters, and maintain corporate records so that our governance practices remain best-in-class.
- Drive M&A and corporate development. Team up with Business Development and the General Counsel to support M&A transactions—from due diligence through integration—helping us identify and mitigate legal risks while moving deals forward efficiently.
- Build operational legal processes. Design and implement templates, playbooks, and workflows that streamline legal operations, reduce bottlenecks, and enable cross-functional teams to close faster without sacrificing compliance.
About you
- You’re business-oriented and collaborative. You love working closely with cross-functional partners—whether it’s product, engineering, marketing, or InfoSec—to deliver legal solutions that unlock growth rather than slow it down.
- You thrive in a fast-paced SaaS environment. You’re energized by rapid iteration and know how to balance legal rigor with practical speed, adapting processes as our business evolves.
- You have a passion for privacy and emerging tech. Navigating GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, and other data protection frameworks gets you excited, and you enjoy exploring how AI and other technologies intersect with legal and regulatory considerations.
- You’re an operational thinker. Building scalable processes and playbooks comes naturally to you—you see opportunities to streamline workflows, reduce friction, and empower stakeholders across the organization.
- You’re a strong communicator and relationship builder. Whether you’re drafting a complex agreement or walking a cross-functional team through a legal risk assessment, you do it with clarity, empathy, and a collaborative spirit.
- You embrace ownership and proactive problem-solving. You spot gaps before they become issues, establish clear playbooks to prevent escalations, and jump in to resolve critical matters quickly when they arise.
What we’re looking for
- J.D. from an accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing.
- 7+ years of legal experience—including both law firm and in-house roles—preferably in SaaS or other high-growth technology environments.
- Proven track record of leading commercial negotiations and delivering strategic counsel across departments.
- Deep expertise in data privacy and security frameworks, including GDPR, CCPA, and HIPAA, with hands-on experience evolving compliance programs.
- Strong knowledge of emerging technologies, especially AI, and an understanding of the regulatory landscape that surrounds them.
- Demonstrated experience (or strong interest) in M&A transactions and corporate governance responsibilities—from diligence to integration.
- Operational mindset, with a passion for building and scaling legal processes that enable business growth.

Verify Employer Thoroughly
Research the company's identity thoroughly before applying. Check for a professional website with contacts, active social media, and LinkedIn profiles. Verify details across platforms and look for reviews on Glassdoor or Trustpilot to confirm legitimacy.
Never Pay to Get a Job
Legitimate employers never require payment for applications, training, background checks, or equipment. Always reject upfront payment requests or demands for bank details, even if they claim it's for purchasing necessary work gear on your behalf.
Safeguard Your Personal Information
Protect sensitive data like SSN, bank details, or ID copies. Share this only after accepting a formal, written job offer. Ensure it's submitted via a secure company system or portal, never through insecure channels like standard email attachments.
Scrutinize Communication & Interviews
Watch for communication red flags: poor grammar, generic emails (@gmail), vague details, or undue pressure. Be highly suspicious of interviews held only via text or chat apps; legitimate companies typically use video or phone calls.
Beware of Unrealistic Offers
If an offer's salary or benefits seem unrealistically high for the work involved, be cautious. Research standard pay for similar roles. Offers that appear 'too good to be true' are often scams designed to lure you into providing information or payment.
Insist on a Formal Contract
Always secure and review a formal, written job offer or employment contract before starting work or sharing final personal details. Ensure it clearly defines your role, compensation, key terms, and conditions to avoid misunderstandings or scams.
