Job Description
About Atticus
At any given time, 16 million Americans are experiencing a crisis that requires urgent help from our legal system or government. The right assistance could transform their lives. But today, most never get it.
Atticus makes it easy for any sick or injured person in crisis to get the life-changing aid they deserve. In the last 6 years we’ve become the leading platform connecting people with disabilities to government benefits. We also help victims of accidents, misconduct, and violence get compensation from insurance. So far, we’ve gotten thousands of people access to over $4B in life-changing aid, and we’re just getting started.
We've helped more than 110,000 people in need (see our 13,000+ five-star reviews) and raised more than $100 million from top VC firms like Fika, Forerunner, GV (Google Ventures), and True Ventures. (We closed our Series C round in April 2025, so we're well-funded for the foreseeable future.) We're small but moving fast — our team grew from 89 to over 151 last year, and we expect to grow again in 2025.
The Job
Each day, hundreds of people seek our help getting disability benefits or insurance compensation. They’re intimidated by the process, unsure where to turn, and desperate for good advice.
As a Paralegal at Atticus, your job is to get them on the right path. This job is different from that of a traditional paralegal. The job mixes responsibilities in any good paralegal’s comfort zone (build client relationships; keep your caseload moving; and collaborate with attorneys on case strategy) with those unique to being an operator in a fast-growing tech company (create client testimonials with Marketing; user test new tools for Product; share learnings with Client Experience).
In a typical week you might do any of the following:
Interview a client, analyze their medical records, and draft a persuasive memo arguing why the SSA should consider them disabled.
Map the questions and logic behind a government benefits application, create your own client-facing form that asks the same information in a client-friendly way, and collect client feedback to evaluate your improvements.
Take on an inefficient workflow that’s slowing the team down (e.g., processing case updates), scope an improvement, get team buy-in, and execute the improvement.
You don’t need any prior legal knowledge or experience to excel in this job, but you do need experience connecting with people across all demographics.
This role is a rare opportunity to join a fast-growing Series B startup and gain exposure to both legal practice and business operations — and mentorship from folks who've been in your shoes. It’s designed to be a path to (a) staying at Atticus and advancing on the Direct Representation team, or (b) heading to law school or business school (we'll help you with applications and we write great recs).
Qualifications
Required:
You have 1+ years of experience succeeding in a professional role that required a substantial amount of client-facing work (like a case manager) or lawyer-facing work (like a paralegal).
You are a resourceful team-player ready to dive into a scrappy startup environment where you will learn quickly and get your hands dirty.
You earned a degree from a top college or university where you demonstrated strong academic performance.
You are comfortable in a variety of interpersonal conversations; you can be empathetic and kind when speaking with average people in a moment of crisis, and can be thoughtful and organized when interacting with attorneys.
You have a demonstrated commitment to doing good and helping people.
Bonus / Nice-to-Have:
You have professional experience helping others apply for government benefits.
You have experience at a startup or other fast-paced, agile environment.
We are strongly committed to building a diverse team. If you’re from a background that’s underrepresented in tech or law, we’d love to meet you.
Salary and Benefits
This is a rare opportunity to join a startup that has strong traction (substantial funding, well-respected backers, tremendous growth, and many happy customers) but is still small enough that you can have a huge impact and play a role in shaping our culture.
We’re a certified B Corporation tackling a critical social problem. Our mission to help people in need drives everything we do, and your work here will touch many lives.
We offer competitive pay — including equity — and generous benefits:
Medical and dental insurance with 100% of employee premiums covered
15 vacation days & ~19 paid holidays each year (including two weeks at end-of-year)
Free membership to OneMedical
$600/year reimbursable stipend for internet service
$1,000 reimbursable stipend for education and training outside of work
Up to $1,200/year student loan repayment assistance
401(k) and optional HSA/FSA
Humble, thoughtful, smart, fun colleagues
We anticipate the base salary band for this role will be between $70,000 and $85,000 in addition to equity and benefits. The salary at offer will be determined by a number of factors such as candidate’s experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity among our team.
Location
This job is fully remote and we’re committed to empowering everyone with flexibility. Live wherever, work remotely, and travel to LA (on the company dime) as needed to be with your colleagues —somewhere between quarterly and yearly. We care a lot about building a great culture and we think some interactions need to happen in person, so we put a lot of thought into retreats, offsites, and other ways to gather.

Verify Employer Thoroughly
Research the company's identity thoroughly before applying. Check for a professional website with contacts, active social media, and LinkedIn profiles. Verify details across platforms and look for reviews on Glassdoor or Trustpilot to confirm legitimacy.
Never Pay to Get a Job
Legitimate employers never require payment for applications, training, background checks, or equipment. Always reject upfront payment requests or demands for bank details, even if they claim it's for purchasing necessary work gear on your behalf.
Safeguard Your Personal Information
Protect sensitive data like SSN, bank details, or ID copies. Share this only after accepting a formal, written job offer. Ensure it's submitted via a secure company system or portal, never through insecure channels like standard email attachments.
Scrutinize Communication & Interviews
Watch for communication red flags: poor grammar, generic emails (@gmail), vague details, or undue pressure. Be highly suspicious of interviews held only via text or chat apps; legitimate companies typically use video or phone calls.
Beware of Unrealistic Offers
If an offer's salary or benefits seem unrealistically high for the work involved, be cautious. Research standard pay for similar roles. Offers that appear 'too good to be true' are often scams designed to lure you into providing information or payment.
Insist on a Formal Contract
Always secure and review a formal, written job offer or employment contract before starting work or sharing final personal details. Ensure it clearly defines your role, compensation, key terms, and conditions to avoid misunderstandings or scams.
