Job Description

The core of SB Nation is its network of nearly 200 communities, many covering an individual sports team. We are looking for a Community Editor who can moderate SB Nation conversations at scale. This is a 12-month temporary position.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Use SB Nation tools to offer consistent moderation across the SB Nation network.
  • Act as an expert at dealing with sensitive subjects, topics, and discussions and understand how to communicate with community members in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Be a strong, empathetic, and when necessary authoritative voice whenever it is necessary to engage with a community or a community member.
  • Moderate comments from a centralized moderation queue, approve or reject filtered or reported comments, and take appropriate measures when necessary, which may include warning, suspending or banning community members, including informing the community member why the action was taken.
  • Document your moderation decisions and actions when necessary for your manager and for the relevant community leader
  • Work in concert with individual community leaders to tailor your moderation approach whenever and wherever necessary.
  • Monitor community discussion and morale and communicate with league Editorial Managers and Producers when actionable situations arise.
  • Monitor user-generated content and reader-created posts, and assist with curation for community homepages
  • Assist in investigating moderation action disputes in coordination with your direct supervisor or Editorial Managers.
  • Understand enough about various sports to know basic terms and to glean context for varied and diverse conversations.
  • Maintain an open line of communication and conversation with your Community Editor team, your managers and Site Managers to help deal with complex situations and to maintain a positive team environment.
  • Moderation is your lead responsibility and must take priority, but any non-moderation time can be spent copyediting on approved communities, or other community or administrative duties as outlined and approved by your manager.
  • Be an expert on the user agreement and community guidelines, which are standard across all communities in the network.

WHO YOU ARE

  • You have an eye for detail and a passion for getting things right
  • You know how to nurture smart, effective conversations
  • You are fluent in the language of the internet, including (and especially) understanding how sports fans and internet commenters speak, behave and interact
  • You understand the passion of sports fans, but you also know when a conversation is toxic or unacceptable
  • You are open to working with employees at all levels, including executive leadership
  • You have strong written and verbal communication skills
  • You’re able to manage multiple tracks of work at once, balancing both short-term and long-term projects simultaneously

Bonus points for:

  • Personal experience building community on social
  • Understanding of SEM, SEO, social media, YouTube, and/or email marketing best practices
  • A passion for digital publishing; experience working in a fast-paced and fluid editorial environment

Safe Remote Job Search Tips

Verify Employer Thoroughly

Research the company's identity thoroughly before applying. Check for a professional website with contacts, active social media, and LinkedIn profiles. Verify details across platforms and look for reviews on Glassdoor or Trustpilot to confirm legitimacy.

Never Pay to Get a Job

Legitimate employers never require payment for applications, training, background checks, or equipment. Always reject upfront payment requests or demands for bank details, even if they claim it's for purchasing necessary work gear on your behalf.

Safeguard Your Personal Information

Protect sensitive data like SSN, bank details, or ID copies. Share this only after accepting a formal, written job offer. Ensure it's submitted via a secure company system or portal, never through insecure channels like standard email attachments.

Scrutinize Communication & Interviews

Watch for communication red flags: poor grammar, generic emails (@gmail), vague details, or undue pressure. Be highly suspicious of interviews held only via text or chat apps; legitimate companies typically use video or phone calls.

Beware of Unrealistic Offers

If an offer's salary or benefits seem unrealistically high for the work involved, be cautious. Research standard pay for similar roles. Offers that appear 'too good to be true' are often scams designed to lure you into providing information or payment.

Insist on a Formal Contract

Always secure and review a formal, written job offer or employment contract before starting work or sharing final personal details. Ensure it clearly defines your role, compensation, key terms, and conditions to avoid misunderstandings or scams.
