Job Description
About Remote
We encourage every member of the Remote team to bring their talents, experiences and culture to the table to help us build the best-in-class HR platform.
At Remote, the Director of IT & AI Automation leads our IT Engineering team to enable Remoters to do their best work through innovative automation and AI solutions. We focus on automating processes across all teams and implementing cutting-edge AI tools to enhance productivity.
This management role requires strategic vision to guide our IT architecture with scalability in mind, while maintaining our core principle: "Be invisible when you can be and unmissable when you should be."
You'll empower your team, provide strategic direction, and work cross-functionally with teams throughout Remote to advance our mission of making employment truly borderless.
What you'll do
- Define and lead Remote’s IT strategy, including AI and automation adoption, scalable infrastructure, and the employee experience roadmap.
- Drive technical innovation by deploying generative AI tools (e.g. Claude for Work, ChatGPT Enterprise, Google Gemini) to streamline workflows, reduce friction, and elevate productivity.
- Design automation-first solutions, using APIs, custom integrations, and low/no-code platforms to reduce manual overhead and boost efficiency across teams.
- Be a hands-on leader, solving complex technical challenges while mentoring engineers by example—not just direction.
- Establish best practices and guardrails for the safe and ethical use of AI tools at scale.
- Own foundational IT architecture decisions, focusing on modern device management, identity access, and zero-trust security for a globally distributed workforce.
- Partner cross-functionally to anticipate IT needs, unlock strategic leverage, and champion solutions before problems arise.
- Build and nurture a high-performing, remote-first IT team grounded in curiosity, experimentation, documentation, and service excellence.
- Shape the evolution of IT Engineering at Remote, complex conventional perceptions of IT and pioneering innovative approaches to support a fully distributed workforce.
Requirements
- A strategic and technical leader with deep experience in cloud infrastructure, SaaS ecosystems, and global device/identity management.
- A builder—comfortable rolling up your sleeves to create automations, systems, and integrations that scale.
- Experienced in generative AI and automation platforms—understanding their capabilities, limitations, and responsible usage.
- A collaborative partner who communicates clearly and works well across all departments.
- Skilled at managing ambiguity and change, with the ability to set clear priorities in fast-moving environments.
- Known for your high agency—you anticipate problems, identify opportunities, and take ownership.
- A mentor and continuous learner, committed to growing both your team and your own expertise.
- A strong communicator with excellent written and verbal English skills.
- Bonus: Prior experience in a remote-first environment is highly valued.
Practicals
- You'll report to: VP of Engineering
- Team: IT Engineering
- Location: EMEA
- Start date: As soon as possible

Verify Employer Thoroughly
Research the company's identity thoroughly before applying. Check for a professional website with contacts, active social media, and LinkedIn profiles. Verify details across platforms and look for reviews on Glassdoor or Trustpilot to confirm legitimacy.
Never Pay to Get a Job
Legitimate employers never require payment for applications, training, background checks, or equipment. Always reject upfront payment requests or demands for bank details, even if they claim it's for purchasing necessary work gear on your behalf.
Safeguard Your Personal Information
Protect sensitive data like SSN, bank details, or ID copies. Share this only after accepting a formal, written job offer. Ensure it's submitted via a secure company system or portal, never through insecure channels like standard email attachments.
Scrutinize Communication & Interviews
Watch for communication red flags: poor grammar, generic emails (@gmail), vague details, or undue pressure. Be highly suspicious of interviews held only via text or chat apps; legitimate companies typically use video or phone calls.
Beware of Unrealistic Offers
If an offer's salary or benefits seem unrealistically high for the work involved, be cautious. Research standard pay for similar roles. Offers that appear 'too good to be true' are often scams designed to lure you into providing information or payment.
Insist on a Formal Contract
Always secure and review a formal, written job offer or employment contract before starting work or sharing final personal details. Ensure it clearly defines your role, compensation, key terms, and conditions to avoid misunderstandings or scams.
