About the Role


We’re looking for an experienced engineering manager to lead a squad of engineers that contribute to The Athletic’s web and mobile products (including web, iOS, Android and API). You will report to the Director of Engineering, Australia and work cross-functionally with engineering leadership, product management, design, data science, and marketing to prioritize projects, manage the team, and be a valued decision-maker within the company.


This role is remote for candidates currently residing in Australia.



Responsibilities
  • Lead the engineering squad as they deliver high-quality software in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
  • Contribute to technology and hiring decisions to meet anticipated demands and scale.
  • Evaluate trade-offs and effectively prioritize tasks within the squad in alignment with strategic initiatives and company goals.
  • Help develop and implement engineering practices to support quality, reliability, scalability or our products and services.
  • Ensure your squad and stakeholders have visibility around the whole development lifecycle and key progress indicators.
  • Coordinate and deliver product releases across web, and mobile apps, as well as deployment of services to support our products.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering leadership, product, design, data science, and marketing teams to define strategy and execute on your roadmap.
  • Hold regular 1:1s, evaluate performance, and provide consistent productive feedback.
  • Help engineers learn the skills needed to advance in their career.
  • Contribute to important company-wide initiatives like diversity and inclusion, technical brand, and hiring process.


Requirements
  • 2+ years experience managing an engineering team.
  • Experience leading a team building both web or iOS/Android products.
  • Prior experience working with/supporting TypeScript/JavaScript, Apollo using AWS desired.
  • Enthusiasm to work in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment.
  • Passion for sports is understandable, but not required.
