Co-create the future with us as we build technology that transforms how the world develops software.

As an Engineering Manager in the Developer Experience (DevEx) group, you will lead 1–2 teams of Backend Engineers and Software Engineers in Test. Your mission: deliver the tools, processes, and testing platforms that enable GitLab developers to ship high-quality changes faster and with confidence.

You’ll join DevEx at a transformative time. With strong executive support and cross-functional alignment, we’re evolving our internal development platform to improve efficiency and developer satisfaction. This is an opportunity to shape our roadmap, influence company-wide engineering culture, and lead a team through meaningful change.

We collaborate closely with GitLab’s Deployment and Release teams and engineering groups across the company to create seamless DevOps workflows and standardized development practices.

Current Projects

DevEx is currently working on:

  • Transforming our test suites and approach to empower development teams to fully own the tests for their features
  • Standardizing GitLab APIs and creating guidelines and training to provide a foundational API platform that makes it easier for feature teams to build new capabilities
  • Enhancing developer environments to improve development workflow and simplify local testing

What You’ll Do

In this role, you'll balance technical leadership with people management, to help DevEx:

  • Build, coach, and support high-performing teams aligned to GitLab’s values
  • Define and drive a roadmap for test infrastructure, tooling, and DevEx improvements
  • Enable engineering teams to own and maintain reliable, effective test suites
  • Create tools and processes that streamline local development and testing
  • Improve merge pipelines and feedback loops to support faster iteration
  • Identify DevEx friction points and deliver impactful, scalable solutions
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and engineering excellence

What You’ll Bring

  • Deep understanding and passion for designing and delivering effective testing and DevEx solutions across multiple development teams
  • Strong people leadership skills with a track record of building inclusive, collaborative teams
  • Experience leading teams through transformation, with the ability to identify high-impact changes and gain buy-in from your team and stakeholders
  • Excellent cross-functional collaboration skills to build and maintain relationships throughout the company

Safe Remote Job Search Tips

Verify Employer Thoroughly

Research the company's identity thoroughly before applying. Check for a professional website with contacts, active social media, and LinkedIn profiles. Verify details across platforms and look for reviews on Glassdoor or Trustpilot to confirm legitimacy.

Never Pay to Get a Job

Legitimate employers never require payment for applications, training, background checks, or equipment. Always reject upfront payment requests or demands for bank details, even if they claim it's for purchasing necessary work gear on your behalf.

Safeguard Your Personal Information

Protect sensitive data like SSN, bank details, or ID copies. Share this only after accepting a formal, written job offer. Ensure it's submitted via a secure company system or portal, never through insecure channels like standard email attachments.

Scrutinize Communication & Interviews

Watch for communication red flags: poor grammar, generic emails (@gmail), vague details, or undue pressure. Be highly suspicious of interviews held only via text or chat apps; legitimate companies typically use video or phone calls.

Beware of Unrealistic Offers

If an offer's salary or benefits seem unrealistically high for the work involved, be cautious. Research standard pay for similar roles. Offers that appear 'too good to be true' are often scams designed to lure you into providing information or payment.

Insist on a Formal Contract

Always secure and review a formal, written job offer or employment contract before starting work or sharing final personal details. Ensure it clearly defines your role, compensation, key terms, and conditions to avoid misunderstandings or scams.
