Mozilla
Head of Strategic Execution & Portfolio Operations (Mozilla.org)
Job Description
Reports to: COO, Mozilla Management Co. (Mozilla.org)
Location: Remote USA
About the Role
Mozilla is a non-profit owned portfolio of companies and organizations that has shaped the internet for over 25 years. Now, with more than 225 million people around the world using our products and participating in our community programs, we’re shaping the next 25 years by creating an internet built for people, not for profit.
With a non-profit 501(c) parent organization, we aren’t beholden to shareholders — only to our mission. Along with thousands of volunteer contributors and collaborators all over the world, Mozillians design, build and distribute open source software that enables people to enjoy the internet on their terms.
Mozilla’s diverse portfolio includes Mozilla Corporation, which distributes Firefox; MZLA, which distributes Thunderbird; Mozilla.ai, which is innovating open AI solutions for developers; Mozilla Ventures, our impact venture fund; and Mozilla Foundation, which leads and funds community programs.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Initiative Execution
- Lead or co-lead time-bound, high-impact initiatives at the portfolio level (e.g., post-acquisition integration, trademark governance reform, AI initiative support).
- Translate Board-approved portfolio strategies into clear workstreams with milestones and delivery cadences.
- Partner with Operating Org execs and Board liaisons to unblock execution bottlenecks.
2. Portfolio Governance & Reporting
- Operate as a steward for the management company’s role in OpCo governance: help prep for Board updates, execute on governance priorities (e.g., capital deployment frameworks, trademark licensing, impact reporting).
- Continued evolution of the structure of the Mozilla.org holding company and management company and related portfolio-wide initiatives.
- Develop and refine execution dashboards and shared scorecards across entities, in alignment with the COO and CFO.
3. Operating Model & Cross-org Collaboration
- Maintain the authority matrix and operating model playbooks (e.g., how decisions flow between OpCos and Mozilla.org).
- Design and evolve portfolio-level meeting forums (e.g., Leadership Council working groups) to support decision-making and strategy alignment without duplicative overhead.
- Serve as a systems thinker — constantly looking to optimize the interface between strategic ambition and operational muscle.
4. Decision Support & COO Leverage
- Provide rigorous analysis and strategic advice to support the COO’s decision-making and board engagement.
- Draft internal decision memos, manage sensitive coordination topics (e.g., conflict resolution between OpCos).
- Extend the COO’s strategic reach without requiring excessive coordination layers or communications overhead.
- Excellent collaboration with the President and their office, as well as other execs & employees of Mozilla.org, and across the Portfolio of Operating Orgs.
What You Bring
Experience
- 10+ years of experience in strategy, operations, senior chief of staff, or portfolio/program leadership roles.
- Experience in PE/VC/Holding Company or startup-like structures is a huge plus.
- Strong operator-executor who can see problems before or as they arise and is the COO’s eyes and ears on the ground.
- Proven expertise in deploying and managing medium-to-light processes for mid-market size companies and/or portfolio organizations, and demonstrated experience running and managing internal cross-functional operations.
- Sound analytical and logical thinking while problem solving crossi-portfolio problems (from capital allocation to other topics).
- Experience working with or around Board-level governance and capital allocation decisions is a plus.
Skills & Attributes
- Exceptional execution skills; equally comfortable zooming out to portfolio strategy and zooming in to resolve execution issues.
- Comfortable managing influence without authority across distributed and varied stakeholders (boards, leaders, others).
- Systems thinker who can balance structure and adaptability in high-trust, low-alignment environments.
- Maturity, discretion, and humility in supporting executive decision-making.
- Adept at synthesizing complexity and creating clarity through process and design.
