About the job

This role will guide the building of key systems and products as part of the Twilio product portfolio, including stream data processing, storage, and identity.

Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll:

  • Design and review core data systems that support a wide range of products.
  • Partner with other engineering leads across R&D to build world-class products
  • Ensure world-class reliability, security, and cost-efficiency for all the products we build
  • Mentor other engineers on the team throughout their journey

Required:

  • Proven experience designing and building large-scale, cloud-based, highly available software and data platforms.
  • Deep expertise in data architecture, including data modeling, real-time and batch data processing, low-latency data storage, and integration with modern data warehouses and data lakes.
  • Work closely with executive leadership to identify new business opportunities enabled by data architecture and infrastructure, supporting strategic goals such as personalization, predictive analytics, or new product development.
  • Experience designing scalable systems for real-time and batch data processing pipelines using modern tools (e.g., Apache Kafka, Spark, Flink, etc.).
  • Recognized thought leader in data and cloud architecture, with a demonstrated ability to set strategic direction and execute with a bias for action.
  • Skilled at balancing long-term architectural vision with short-term business priorities, enabling pragmatic and sustainable solutions.
  • Proven ability to design complex, scalable, and fault-tolerant data systems in an iterative and evolutionary manner.
  • Committed to implementing best practices in data governance, data quality, and compliance across the organization.
  • Strong cloud expertise with hands-on experience in cloud ecosystems (e.g., AWS, GCP, or Azure) and designing systems optimized for performance and cost-efficiency.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively articulate data architecture concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong collaborator, able to influence and build productive relationships across engineering, data science, product, and business teams.
  • Passionate about enabling other developers and data professionals through leadership, mentoring, and driving efficient, well-informed decision-making.
  • Experienced in leading teams to tackle highly complex engineering and data architecture challenges, delivering innovative and impactful solutions.
  • Skilled at articulating and sharing platform vision with customers and synthesizing their business needs to influence strategy and vision

Location

This role will be remote, and based in the USA.

Travel

We prioritize connection and opportunities to build relationships with our customers and each other. For this role, approximately 5-10% travel is anticipated to help you connect in-person in a meaningful way.

Compensation

*Please note this role is open to candidates outside of California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, Washington D.C., and Washington State. The information below is provided for candidates hired in those locations only.

The estimated pay ranges for this role are as follows:

  • Based in Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Vermont or Washington D.C. : $245,800.00 - $307,200.00
  • Based in New York, New Jersey, Washington State, or California (outside of the San Francisco Bay area): $260,200.00 - $ 325,300.00
  • Based in the San Francisco Bay area, California:$289,100.00 - $ 361,400.00
  • This role may be eligible to participate in Twilio’s equity plan and corporate bonus plan. All roles are generally eligible for the following benefits: health care insurance, 401(k) retirement account, paid sick time, paid personal time off, paid parental leave.

The successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills, experience, and geographic location.
