Software Engineering Manager, R&D

Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Natera is seeking a skilled, self-motivated “Software Engineering Manager, R&D” to lead a global software development team. The team will support cutting-edge research and development. This role includes developing and leading a distributed engineering team, project management, and professional communication responsibilities on high-impact, high-visibility products. Experience with Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) or bioinformatics is highly valued. Expertise in AWS is required, and SRE (Site Reliability Engineering) experience is a plus.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Lead

  • Lead technical design, architecture, and implementation strategy development.

  • Establish and uphold best engineering practices.

  • Provide technical leadership for software development engineers, both US-based and international, ensuring on-time, on-budget development of high-quality software.

Manage

  • Manage multiple ongoing projects.

  • Identify project objectives, software deliverable scope, external dependencies, resources, risks, and project framework.

  • Facilitate collaboration, resolve issues, evaluate project performance, and ensure timely project delivery.

  • Lead standups and other Agile ceremonies.

Nurture

  • Guide the career development of team members, nurturing both technical and interpersonal skills.

  • Provide individual performance feedback focused on recognizing achievements and identifying opportunities for growth.

  • Conduct 1:1s, performance evaluations, and other developmental activities.

Collaborate

  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with stakeholders, focusing on effective communication channels.

  • Oversee collaboration among cross-functional development teams, software quality engineers, and product managers.

Effect Change

  • Provide feedback to management and propose changes to optimize software development processes with a focus on quality, innovation, and efficient product delivery.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS or MS degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.

  • 2+ years of proven experience building and managing high-performance engineering teams.

  • 5+ years of software development experience using Python, Java, or similar languages.

  • Expertise in AWS cloud technologies.

  • Experience with Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) or bioinformatics is highly valued.

  • SRE (Site Reliability Engineering) experience is a plus.

  • Proven track record in leading remote teams.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Passion for people management and mentorship.

  • Experience in biotech or other regulated industries is a plus.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Proven record of managing highly effective engineering teams.

  • Willingness and ability to manage global teams across multiple time zones.

  • Commitment to recruiting strong and diverse talent.

  • Hands-on coding, design, and architecture skills.

  • Strong experience mentoring developers and providing growth opportunities.

  • Excellent project management skills in Agile environments.

  • Familiarity with NGS workflows, bioinformatics pipelines, or processing genomic data is a plus.

  • Strong experience with AWS services (e.g., EC2, S3, Lambda).

  • Knowledge of SRE principles and best practices is a plus.

  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally and communicate effectively with reports, peers, and stakeholders.

  • Demonstrates initiative and a proactive approach to addressing issues and finding creative solutions.

  • Strong work ethic, ability to work under pressure, and meet deadlines in stressful circumstances.

  • Experience developing software in a regulated environment is a plus.

The pay range is listed and actual compensation packages are based on a wide array of factors unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, years & depth of experience, certifications and specific office location. This may differ in other locations due to cost of labor considerations.
