Job Description

Who are we and why should you join us?

BetterHelp is on a mission to remove the traditional barriers to therapy and make mental health care more accessible to everyone. Founded in 2013, we are now the world’s largest online therapy service, providing affordable and convenient therapy in across the globe. Our network of over 30,000 licensed therapists has helped millions of people take ownership of their mental health and change their lives forever. And we’re not stopping there – as the unmet need for mental health services continues to grow, BetterHelp is committed to being part of the solution.

As a Software Quality Assurance Engineer III at BetterHelp, you’ll join a diverse team of licensed clinicians, engineers, product pros, creatives, marketers, and business leaders who share a passion for expanding access to therapy. And as a mental health company, we take employee mental health just as seriously as we do our mission. We deeply invest in our team’s well-being and professional development, because we know that business and individual growth go hand-in-hand. At BetterHelp, you’ll carve your own path, make an immediate impact, and be challenged every day – with a supportive community behind you the whole way.

What are we looking for?

BetterHelp is changing the way it tests its software. We’re looking for the pioneers who will form our new Localization Quality Assurance team. You will be part of an agile software development team with the responsibility to define and perform the tests necessary to ensure that our products meet the high standards we set for quality.

You will have the opportunity to determine the best strategy for testing the features that fall into your responsibilities and won’t just be executing tests that someone else creates. You'll also bring a strong understanding of test case design, regression strategies, and bug lifecycle management, and will be comfortable collaborating cross-functionally to support product excellence.

What will you do?

  • Determine the best test strategy for assigned areas of test, whether it be manual or automated testing
  • Write clear and concise test plans, test cases, and bug reports
  • Write scalable, reliable automated tests using tools such as Cypress or Playwright (Playwright preferred)
  • Collaborate closely with developers and product managers
  • Lead testing for small to medium features (e.g., 2-point Jira cards) independently
  • Mentor junior QA team members and help them expand their product and technical knowledge
  • Research test tools, methodologies, and trends to improve existing practices and processes

What will you NOT do?

  • You will NOT worry about "runway", "cash left", or "how much time we have until the next round". We have the startup DNA but we're fully backed and funded, all the way to success.
  • You will NOT be confined to your "job". You will get involved in product, marketing, business strategy, and almost everything we do.
  • You will NOT be bogged down by office politics, ego, or bad attitude. Only positive, pleasure-to-work-with people are allowed here!
  • You will NOT get yourself burned out. We work hard but we believe in maintaining a sustainable work/life balance. Really.

Can I work remotely?

Yes. We operate on PST and candidates in any time zone are welcome to apply. We ask employees to travel to our San Jose, CA office up to three times per year plus one company-wide offsite to collaborate in person and strengthen working relationships. Travel expenses are covered and reasonable accommodations are made for those under unique circumstances who cannot travel.

Requirements

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • At least 3 years of Software Quality Assurance (SQA) experience
  • At least 1 year of experience in localization testing
  • Prior experience as a QA Engineer or SDET
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Previous experience working in an Agile development environment
  • Strong understanding of QA best practices
  • Proficiency in test case design, test coverage strategies, and regression testing
  • Experience with at least one automation tool such as Cypress or Playwright (Playwright preferred)
  • Comfortable with SQL and relational databases (SQL fluency is a plus)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Passionate about quality and continuous improvement

Bonus (Great to have but not required):

  • Performance, stress, or load testing
  • Mobile testing experience
  • Accessibility testing experience
  • Bilingual or multilingual communication skills

Benefits

  • Remote work with regular in-person bonding experiences sponsored by the company
  • Competitive compensation
  • Holistic perks program (including free therapy, employee wellness, and more)
  • Excellent health, dental, and vision coverage
  • 401k benefits with employer matching contribution
  • The chance to build something that changes lives – and that people love
  • Any piece of hardware or software that will make you happy and productive
  • An awesome community of co-workers

Safe Remote Job Search Tips

Verify Employer Thoroughly

Research the company's identity thoroughly before applying. Check for a professional website with contacts, active social media, and LinkedIn profiles. Verify details across platforms and look for reviews on Glassdoor or Trustpilot to confirm legitimacy.

Never Pay to Get a Job

Legitimate employers never require payment for applications, training, background checks, or equipment. Always reject upfront payment requests or demands for bank details, even if they claim it's for purchasing necessary work gear on your behalf.

Safeguard Your Personal Information

Protect sensitive data like SSN, bank details, or ID copies. Share this only after accepting a formal, written job offer. Ensure it's submitted via a secure company system or portal, never through insecure channels like standard email attachments.

Scrutinize Communication & Interviews

Watch for communication red flags: poor grammar, generic emails (@gmail), vague details, or undue pressure. Be highly suspicious of interviews held only via text or chat apps; legitimate companies typically use video or phone calls.

Beware of Unrealistic Offers

If an offer's salary or benefits seem unrealistically high for the work involved, be cautious. Research standard pay for similar roles. Offers that appear 'too good to be true' are often scams designed to lure you into providing information or payment.

Insist on a Formal Contract

Always secure and review a formal, written job offer or employment contract before starting work or sharing final personal details. Ensure it clearly defines your role, compensation, key terms, and conditions to avoid misunderstandings or scams.
