Pinterest is on a mission to bring everyone the inspiration to create a life they love. The Applied Science team plays a critical role in this mission by developing cutting-edge ML solutions that can be applied across Pinterest engineering teams (see previous publications). We're looking for a highly technical engineering manager with a deep understanding of representation learning to manage, lead and develop a team of machine learning researchers and engineers that are under the Applied Science team; an individual who can help the team build a portfolio of work which can balance both long term need and short term need of the business; and who can partner with senior leaders to evolve our team’s roadmap and help us fulfill our mission of bringing Pinterest’s mission.
What you will do:
- Manage, lead, and develop a talented sub-team of machine learning researchers and engineers specializing in representation learning.
- Partner with your team to define the sub-team's charter, ensuring it prioritizes both cutting-edge research and building foundational embeddings that benefit various products across Pinterest.
- Champion the use of state-of-the-art representation learning techniques to create efficient and effective embeddings.
- Advocate for high quality decision-making and challenge decisions with highly biased data; bring a justified view of the trade-off between rigor and velocity.
- Collaborate with data scientists and product partners to prototype, build and scale solutions to key challenges across Pinterest engineering teams.
- Partner with leaders in the company to deepen user understanding and help set the strategic direction of our representation learning roadmap
What we are looking for:
- 6+ years of combined post-graduate academic and industry experience applying state-of-the-art ML technologies to solve real-world problems on web-scale data; 2+ years of management experience
- Demonstrated execution and impact on initiatives that cross multiple product areas and interface with leadership and product teams with a track record of influencing leaders and peers using data
- Experience mentoring and up-leveling other software engineers and machine learning engineers
- Self-propelled continuous learner who keeps up with new tools and methodologies and builds prototypes with concepts learned
- Strong business and product sense: delight in shaping vague questions into well-defined projects and success metrics that drive business decisions
- Excellent communication skills: able to communicate findings with leadership and product teams, and track record of publications in machine learning, AI, data science, data analytics, statistics, or related technical fields
- Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in a relevant field such as Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
In-Office Requirement Statement:
- We let the type of work you do guide the collaboration style. That means we're not always working in an office, but we continue to gather for key moments of collaboration and connection.
This position is not eligible for relocation assistance.

Safe Remote Job Search Tips
Verify Employer Thoroughly
Research the company's identity thoroughly before applying. Check for a professional website with contacts, active social media, and LinkedIn profiles. Verify details across platforms and look for reviews on Glassdoor or Trustpilot to confirm legitimacy.
Never Pay to Get a Job
Legitimate employers never require payment for applications, training, background checks, or equipment. Always reject upfront payment requests or demands for bank details, even if they claim it's for purchasing necessary work gear on your behalf.
Safeguard Your Personal Information
Protect sensitive data like SSN, bank details, or ID copies. Share this only after accepting a formal, written job offer. Ensure it's submitted via a secure company system or portal, never through insecure channels like standard email attachments.
Scrutinize Communication & Interviews
Watch for communication red flags: poor grammar, generic emails (@gmail), vague details, or undue pressure. Be highly suspicious of interviews held only via text or chat apps; legitimate companies typically use video or phone calls.
Beware of Unrealistic Offers
If an offer's salary or benefits seem unrealistically high for the work involved, be cautious. Research standard pay for similar roles. Offers that appear 'too good to be true' are often scams designed to lure you into providing information or payment.
Insist on a Formal Contract
Always secure and review a formal, written job offer or employment contract before starting work or sharing final personal details. Ensure it clearly defines your role, compensation, key terms, and conditions to avoid misunderstandings or scams.
