Software Engineering Team Leader (Mobile), Fortitude Valley

Software Engineering Team Leaders at Repeat manage people and work on our product. Their time is split between people management and technical delivery work.

They are technically credible and know the details of what engineers work on, half of their time is spent safeguarding their team’s health, hiring a world-class team, and putting them in the best position to succeed. They own the delivery of product commitments and are always looking to improve productivity.

The other half of their time is spent dedicated to areas of the product. They work together with product managers, designers, and other teams to solve common goals, QA and devops to deploy quality code, and support to resolve bugs. They will work across the backend (NodeJs), and frontend (React.js, Typescript) parts of our application.

Unless otherwise specified, all Software Engineering Team Leader roles at Repeat share the following requirements and responsibilities:

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership role with current technical experience
  • Demonstrated experience in running Scrum or other agile rituals
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering mobile applications to market, working with both Android (Google Play) and iOS (Apple Store) delivery
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills
  • In-depth technical experience in React Native and React
  • Professional experience with Typescript
  • Professional experience working with NodeJS, SQL (MySQL or PostgreSQL) and MongoDB
  • Experience with writing automated tests (e.g. Jest, Cypress, Karma, Jasmine, Mocha, AVA, tape)
  • Experience using Git in a professional/workplace environment
  • A solid understanding in core mobile concepts
  • A solid understanding of semantic HTML, CSS, and core JavaScript concepts.
  • Demonstrated capacity to clearly and concisely communicate about complex technical, architectural, and/or organizational problems and propose thorough iterative solutions
  • Experience with performance and optimization problems and a demonstrated ability to both diagnose and prevent these problems
  • Comfort working in a highly agile, intensely iterative software development process
  • Demonstrated ability to onboard and integrate with an organization long-term
  • Positive and solution-oriented mindset
  • Effective communication skills: Regularly achieve consensus with peers, and clear status updates
  • An inclination towards communication, inclusion, and visibility
  • Self-motivated and self-managing, with strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with other parts of the organization

Nice to have:

  • Experience in a peak performance organization, preferably a tech startup
  • Experience with the competitive video games such as Fortnite, DotA2, League of Legends, Rocket League etc

  • Computer science education or equivalent experience
  • Experience working with a global or otherwise multicultural team

Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of engineers.
  • Help your engineers grow their skills and experience
  • Run agile (Scrum) project management processes
  • Own the delivery of the Repeat mobile app to market
  • Provide guidance and coaching to team members on technical contributions, product architecture, and other areas
  • Maintain empathy for the team by keeping awareness of engineering processes and practices. Examples might be: evaluating individual workflow during one on ones, conducting code reviews, or working on non-critical path bugs and/or features
  • Conduct managerial interviews for candidates, and train the team to do technical interviews
  • Generate and implement process improvements
  • Hold regular 1:1s with all members of their team
  • Give regular and clear feedback around the individual’s performance
  • Foster technical decision making on the team, but make final decisions when necessary
  • Improve product quality, security, and performance
  • May have more than one specialty on their team, per our shared domain concept
  • Participate in the Incident Management on-call rotation to help ensure the availability goals for Repeat are met, by working with support team members and development team members.
  • Develop features and improvements to the Repeat product in a secure, well-tested, and performant way
  • You’ll work with Product Management and other stakeholders (Backend, UX, etc.) to iterate on new features within the Repeat product.
  • Craft code that meets our internal standards for style, maintainability, and best practices for a high-scale web environment. Maintain and advocate for these standards through code review.
  • Confidently ship small features and improvements with minimal guidance and support from other team members. Collaborate with the team on larger projects.
  • You'll help improve the overall experience of our product through improving the quality of the features both in your group and features that benefit other groups.
  • You’ll help identify areas of improvements in the code base, both specific to your group and outside your group (eg. component library) and help contribute to make it better
  • You’ll learn, collaborate and mentor other Software Engineers. Everyone can contribute something new to the team regardless of how long they’ve been in the industry.
  • Help to triage bugs and work with others to determine priority, and then work with the team to have them successfully resolved
  • You’ll contribute to and follow our workflow process, alongside the rest of the Software Engineers and the Repeat community as a whole.
