Job Description

Who we are

Our mission at Sourcegraph is to make it so that everyone can code, not just ~0.1% of the population.

Everything is changing in how software gets built, and Sourcegraph builds tools that make it easier at scale. Code Search helps devs explore and understand massive codebases. Amp, our agentic coding tool, dramatically accelerates the time it takes to write new code and tackle complex problems like migrating and transforming code.

We’re trusted by engineering teams at leading companies like Stripe, Uber, and Palo Alto Networks, and with $225M in funding from investors like a16z, Sequoia, and Redpoint, we are building the tools that will define the next era of enterprise software development. We’re a globally distributed team with a culture of high agency, direct communication, and deep love for developers.

If you want to work at the bleeding edge of software and do the most meaningful work of your career, join us.

Hours & location

🌎 While we hire almost anywhere in the world, we have a preference for someone to reside in the following locations for this role. However, if you feel qualified, we welcome you to apply regardless of location. No matter what, working hours must overlap with PST and CET for at least 20 hours/week.

Why this job is exciting

How humans build, create, and work together is changing. Everything is changing. And today’s frontier models are just the beginning.

Amp is one of the highest quality coding agents available. You will be designing for the people who choose Amp, meeting their high expectations in every interaction.

We’re looking for a Senior+ Design Engineer who loves crafting beautiful weird powerful tools… who is just as comfortable customizing their zsh config as they are working in Figma… and is excited to build the future.

You’ll be joining our small team as the second Design Engineer, crafting everything from first touch to the 400th hour… shipping multiple times a day… and working directly with users.

📅 Within one month, you will…

  • Familiarize yourself with all corners of Amp, absorbing the norms.
  • Familiarize yourself with how we build Amp.
  • Develop a deep understanding of our user workflows, technical constraints, and design principles.
  • Pair with engineers and designers to ship features that are high quality and feel like they belong and fit in.

📅 Within three months, you will…

  • Build & design the best agentic coding tool and platform.
  • Ship product improvements across multiple areas, iterated on user feedback, and improved the marketing site and docs.
  • Code and prototype often, talk to users and customers often, and be on a team that loves doing the same.

About you

You are bold, forward-thinking, and different in your designs; you’re building the most important technology of the century, not just a SaaS app. You have a proven track record as a primary designer or design engineer on a significant product, feature, or platform.

Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience in design engineering or frontend engineering with significant design ownership.
  • Experience working in a highly regarded tech company or startup.
  • Experience using AI dev tools.
  • Expertise in modern frontend technologies (Svelte/React, TypeScript), design tooling (Figma), and designing in the browser.
  • Exceptional design sensibility.
  • Ability to translate high-level concepts into detailed, production-ready interfaces.
  • Excellent collaboration skills with designers and engineers.
  • Must code regularly and feel just as comfortable in the terminal as in Figma.

Nice to haves:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science.

Safe Remote Job Search Tips

Verify Employer Thoroughly

Research the company's identity thoroughly before applying. Check for a professional website with contacts, active social media, and LinkedIn profiles. Verify details across platforms and look for reviews on Glassdoor or Trustpilot to confirm legitimacy.

Never Pay to Get a Job

Legitimate employers never require payment for applications, training, background checks, or equipment. Always reject upfront payment requests or demands for bank details, even if they claim it's for purchasing necessary work gear on your behalf.

Safeguard Your Personal Information

Protect sensitive data like SSN, bank details, or ID copies. Share this only after accepting a formal, written job offer. Ensure it's submitted via a secure company system or portal, never through insecure channels like standard email attachments.

Scrutinize Communication & Interviews

Watch for communication red flags: poor grammar, generic emails (@gmail), vague details, or undue pressure. Be highly suspicious of interviews held only via text or chat apps; legitimate companies typically use video or phone calls.

Beware of Unrealistic Offers

If an offer's salary or benefits seem unrealistically high for the work involved, be cautious. Research standard pay for similar roles. Offers that appear 'too good to be true' are often scams designed to lure you into providing information or payment.

Insist on a Formal Contract

Always secure and review a formal, written job offer or employment contract before starting work or sharing final personal details. Ensure it clearly defines your role, compensation, key terms, and conditions to avoid misunderstandings or scams.
