Job Description

Discord is used by over 200 million people every month for many different reasons, but there’s one thing that nearly everyone does on our platform: play video games. Over 90% of our users play games, spending a combined 1.5 billion hours playing thousands of unique titles on Discord each month. Discord plays a uniquely important role in the future of gaming. We are focused on making it easier and more fun for people to talk and hang out before, during, and after playing games.

We are looking for a rigorous and empathetic Safety By Design Policy practitioner who is passionate about understanding and shaping technology’s impact on our users and society. As a member of the Product Policy organization, you will lead our efforts to build safe products in collaboration with Product and Engineering, focused on Discord’s public API, SDKs, and our developer ecosystem. You will report to the Senior Manager, Safety By Design Policy.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Partner with Product, Engineering, Legal, Design, Developer Compliance, Developer Relations, and other cross-functional roles to identify safety risks and opportunities in new visible and invisible product changes; work with those teams to build mitigations into the product design and contribute to product strategy.
  • Own the Discord Developer Policies, governing the acceptable uses of our public API and SDKs by third-party developers, in close collaboration with the Developer Compliance and Legal teams.
  • Build and maintain knowledge about Discord’s public API, SDKs, products, internal tools, infrastructure, and developer ecosystem of third-party applications.
  • Work closely with the Safety cross-functional group (Safety XFN) to evaluate the policy and enforcement impacts on new product changes, and scope the necessary requirements to support those teams.
  • Support the development of responsible product development content, such as training, guides, talking points, strategies, and presentations, for engagement with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Write user-facing communications to explain our products and safety features through blog posts, Help Center Articles, and other resources.

Please note: Potential exposure to sensitive or graphic content, including but not limited to vulgar language, violent threats, pornography and other graphic images.

What you should have

  • At least 3 years’ experience working on APIs, SDKs, app stores, middleware, open source, or other third-party integrations.
  • Experience working on relevant issues, preferably responsible product development, trust & safety product, advocacy for marginalized communities; or similar functions in non-profit, community organizations, or tech.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education / experience
  • Passion for understanding and mitigating the unintended impact of the online communication services on users and society.
  • Experience working directly with product, engineering, design, research partners, or multiple stakeholders at the same time.
  • Attitude of collaboration, flexibility, and always questioning your assumptions.

Bonus Points

  • Programming experience is not required, but it may be helpful in demonstrating proficiency with APIs.
  • Familiarity with Discord
  • Experience in international social issues or policy development
  • Multilingual

Safe Remote Job Search Tips

Verify Employer Thoroughly

Research the company's identity thoroughly before applying. Check for a professional website with contacts, active social media, and LinkedIn profiles. Verify details across platforms and look for reviews on Glassdoor or Trustpilot to confirm legitimacy.

Never Pay to Get a Job

Legitimate employers never require payment for applications, training, background checks, or equipment. Always reject upfront payment requests or demands for bank details, even if they claim it's for purchasing necessary work gear on your behalf.

Safeguard Your Personal Information

Protect sensitive data like SSN, bank details, or ID copies. Share this only after accepting a formal, written job offer. Ensure it's submitted via a secure company system or portal, never through insecure channels like standard email attachments.

Scrutinize Communication & Interviews

Watch for communication red flags: poor grammar, generic emails (@gmail), vague details, or undue pressure. Be highly suspicious of interviews held only via text or chat apps; legitimate companies typically use video or phone calls.

Beware of Unrealistic Offers

If an offer's salary or benefits seem unrealistically high for the work involved, be cautious. Research standard pay for similar roles. Offers that appear 'too good to be true' are often scams designed to lure you into providing information or payment.

Insist on a Formal Contract

Always secure and review a formal, written job offer or employment contract before starting work or sharing final personal details. Ensure it clearly defines your role, compensation, key terms, and conditions to avoid misunderstandings or scams.
