Job Description

About CookUnity

Food has lost its soul to modern convenience. And with it, has lost the power to nourish, inspire, and connect us. So in 2018, CookUnity was founded as the first-of-its-kind platform that connects the world with the source of truly great food: chefs. Today, CookUnity delivers 35 million meals a year from the industry’s best chefs to homes all over the country. Fresh. Ready-to-eat. And crafted with the passion that nourishes body and soul.

Unwilling to stop there, CookUnity is expanding beyond delivery to become an ever-innovating marketplace focused on our singular mission: empower Chefs to nourish the world.

If that mission has you hungry in more ways than one, you’ve found the right job posting.

The Team:

The Menu Team is part of CookUnity’s Marketplace Zone, which focuses on creating a seamless and scalable platform that connects chefs with consumers. As the heart of the platform, the menu represents one of the most important interaction users have with CookUnity, enabling them to browse, explore, and choose meals.

The team is responsible for two key areas:

  1. User-Facing Menu Experience: Provide the best menu exploration experience to our users across mobile and web. This involves experimentation and iteration in search, discovery, meal displays, and menu taxonomy to maximize engagement and satisfaction.
  2. Provider and Source of Truth for Menu Data: Responsible for the accuracy, stability, and availability of critical consumer-facing menu data that powers multiple parts of the platform, both within and outside the Marketplace Zone.

The Role:

We are looking for a Backend Engineer to join the Menu Team, where you will play a key role in building and optimizing backend services and APIs that power CookUnity’s menu experience. This role involves working on the Server-Driven UI (SDUI) service within our Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) architecture, as well as developing and maintaining backend services and databases.

As part of a cross-functional team, you will collaborate closely with product managers, mobile/web engineers, and designers to create an engaging menu experience. This is a great opportunity for a semi-senior engineer eager to work on challenging technical problems while contributing to customer-facing products that directly impact user engagement and satisfaction.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain scalable backend services and APIs that power the menu experience across mobile and web.
  • Implement and optimize the BFF (Backend-for-Frontend) layer, ensuring efficient data handling and low-latency API responses.
  • Collaborate with frontend, mobile, and product teams to design and implement new menu-related features.
  • Optimize database queries and caching strategies for high-performance API responses.
  • Improve monitoring, observability, and logging for backend services.
  • Participate in code reviews and engineering discussions, contributing to technical best practices.

Minimum Requirements:

  • 5+ years of experience in backend development, with expertise in Kotlin.
  • Experience in backend development, with Node.js and TypeScript.
  • Strong understanding of RESTful APIs, GraphQL, and backend-for-frontend (BFF)
  • Experience working with SQL databases (PostgreSQL or MySQL) and optimizing queries.
  • Familiarity with service-oriented architecture and microservices.
  • Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills for backend services and APIs.
  • Solid understanding of performance optimization, caching, and API response efficiency.
  • Advanced English communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Knowledge of AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with observability tools like DataDog and logging frameworks.
  • Understanding of GraphQL APIs and schema design best practices.

Benefits:

Safe Remote Job Search Tips

Verify Employer Thoroughly

Research the company's identity thoroughly before applying. Check for a professional website with contacts, active social media, and LinkedIn profiles. Verify details across platforms and look for reviews on Glassdoor or Trustpilot to confirm legitimacy.

Never Pay to Get a Job

Legitimate employers never require payment for applications, training, background checks, or equipment. Always reject upfront payment requests or demands for bank details, even if they claim it's for purchasing necessary work gear on your behalf.

Safeguard Your Personal Information

Protect sensitive data like SSN, bank details, or ID copies. Share this only after accepting a formal, written job offer. Ensure it's submitted via a secure company system or portal, never through insecure channels like standard email attachments.

Scrutinize Communication & Interviews

Watch for communication red flags: poor grammar, generic emails (@gmail), vague details, or undue pressure. Be highly suspicious of interviews held only via text or chat apps; legitimate companies typically use video or phone calls.

Beware of Unrealistic Offers

If an offer's salary or benefits seem unrealistically high for the work involved, be cautious. Research standard pay for similar roles. Offers that appear 'too good to be true' are often scams designed to lure you into providing information or payment.

Insist on a Formal Contract

Always secure and review a formal, written job offer or employment contract before starting work or sharing final personal details. Ensure it clearly defines your role, compensation, key terms, and conditions to avoid misunderstandings or scams.
