Job Description

Datavant is a data platform company and the world’s leader in health data exchange. Our vision is that every healthcare decision is powered by the right data, at the right time, in the right format.

Our platform is powered by the largest, most diverse health data network in the U.S., enabling data to be secure, accessible and usable to inform better health decisions. Datavant is trusted by the world’s leading life sciences companies, government agencies, and those who deliver and pay for care.

By joining Datavant today, you’re stepping onto a high-performing, values-driven team. Together, we’re rising to the challenge of tackling some of healthcare’s most complex problems with technology-forward solutions. Datavanters bring a diversity of professional, educational and life experiences to realize our bold vision for healthcare.

We are looking for a visionary engineering leader to spearhead the development of our next-generation, AI-powered Provider Coding platform. This platform will integrate seamlessly with clinical systems (e.g., EHRs), extract and analyze medical chart data, predict billing codes using machine learning, and provide intuitive, auditable workflows for medical coders.

As Senior Director of Engineering, you will define and execute the technical strategy, lead architecture design, and grow a high-performing team. This role is highly cross-functional, requiring close collaboration with Product, Data Science, Security, Compliance, and Go-to-Market teams. You will also contribute to M&A activities, including technical due diligence and post-acquisition integration.

In this role you will:

  • Define and lead the technical vision for our next-generation, cloud-native Provider Coding platform, aligning innovation with business and clinical impact.

  • Build and scale a high-performing engineering team, fostering a culture of ownership, continuous learning, and delivering exceptional customer value.

  • Architect secure, scalable integrations with electronic health records (EHRs) and clinical systems using standards such as HL7, FHIR, and modern APIs.

  • Partner with Data Science to integrate AI/ML models that predict billing codes and support human-in-the-loop coding workflows.

  • Design intuitive and auditable coder workflows that meet usability expectations and strict regulatory requirements.

  • Ensure compliance with healthcare security and privacy standards, including HIPAA and SOC2, embedding these principles into platform design and operations.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Security, Compliance, Operations, and GTM teams to translate complex needs into technical solutions.

  • Drive product development at speed and scale, balancing short-term delivery with long-term platform resilience and scalability.

  • Support M&A efforts, contributing to technical due diligence and leading post-acquisition integration of acquired platforms or teams when applicable.

What You Bring to the Table:

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, with 5+ years in a leadership role—preferably in healthcare or enterprise B2B SaaS.

  • Proven success in building and operating secure, cloud-hosted platforms at scale.

  • Deep expertise in secure SDLC, API integrations (especially HL7/FHIR), and compliance frameworks like HIPAA and SOC2.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and deliver ML-driven applications into production.

  • Strong communication, leadership, and team development skills.

  • Experience with microservices, event-driven systems, and cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure).

  • Background in designing workflow or task automation systems with auditing and user feedback mechanisms.

Nice-to-Have Qualifications

  • Familiarity with Revenue Cycle Management and medical billing codes (CPT, ICD).

  • Experience building tools for medical coders or clinical operations.

  • Knowledge of major EHR systems (Epic, Cerner, Athenahealth, etc.).

  • Exposure to human-in-the-loop AI or reinforcement learning.

  • Experience navigating high-growth or post-M&A integration environments.

Why Join Us

  • Impact at Scale: Drive innovation at the intersection of healthcare, AI, and data, improving outcomes for providers and patients.

  • Ownership & Autonomy: Help shape a core strategic platform within a fast-growing, mission-driven organization.

  • Leadership Opportunity: Build and lead a foundational engineering team, influencing both what we build and how we build it.

  • Transformative Mission: Empower providers to focus on care while improving efficiency and financial performance through cutting-edge tech.

What Success Looks Like

  • You’ve built and scaled a secure, AI-enhanced platform that integrates with top EHRs and supports medical coding workflows.

  • Your team is high-performing, mission-driven, and consistently delivers high-quality solutions.

  • Stakeholders view you as a strategic leader, trusted partner, and strong advocate for engineering excellence.

  • You’ve helped navigate successful integrations, whether through M&A or rapid growth phases.

Leadership Mindset

  • Leadership roles in startups and enterprise settings.

  • Strategic thinker with hands-on execution ability.

  • Operates with a builder’s mindset—comfortable in ambiguity, fast-moving environments, and scaling organizations.

  • Relentlessly customer-focused, with strong product and user empathy.

  • Committed to transparency, feedback, and personal growth—for self and team.

  • Values cross-functional collaboration and diverse perspectives.

  • Holds a deep commitment to privacy, data security, and responsible innovation.

Safe Remote Job Search Tips

Verify Employer Thoroughly

Research the company's identity thoroughly before applying. Check for a professional website with contacts, active social media, and LinkedIn profiles. Verify details across platforms and look for reviews on Glassdoor or Trustpilot to confirm legitimacy.

Never Pay to Get a Job

Legitimate employers never require payment for applications, training, background checks, or equipment. Always reject upfront payment requests or demands for bank details, even if they claim it's for purchasing necessary work gear on your behalf.

Safeguard Your Personal Information

Protect sensitive data like SSN, bank details, or ID copies. Share this only after accepting a formal, written job offer. Ensure it's submitted via a secure company system or portal, never through insecure channels like standard email attachments.

Scrutinize Communication & Interviews

Watch for communication red flags: poor grammar, generic emails (@gmail), vague details, or undue pressure. Be highly suspicious of interviews held only via text or chat apps; legitimate companies typically use video or phone calls.

Beware of Unrealistic Offers

If an offer's salary or benefits seem unrealistically high for the work involved, be cautious. Research standard pay for similar roles. Offers that appear 'too good to be true' are often scams designed to lure you into providing information or payment.

Insist on a Formal Contract

Always secure and review a formal, written job offer or employment contract before starting work or sharing final personal details. Ensure it clearly defines your role, compensation, key terms, and conditions to avoid misunderstandings or scams.
