Job Description

Mission Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Engineer to play a critical role in evaluating and improving the performance of our autonomous vehicle (AV) technology. This position demands a strong technical understanding of Autonomous Vehicles, coupled with strong communication and presentation skills and the ability to coordinate and organize diverse organizations to achieve a single high value, high profile goal. A key focus of this role will be the demonstration of Motional’s AV technology to investors and partners. The ideal candidate will be passionate about autonomous vehicles and possess the technical acumen to understand AV performance and communicate what is happening on the road to both AV knowledgeable and other audiences.

What You’ll Be Doing

Evaluation of AV Performance Metrics: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including systems engineers, software engineers, AI scientists, control engineers, simulation engineers, and validation teams to understand what is happening with the AV in on road situations and determine what options are available to resolve those issues in both the short and long term. Areas of performance will include things like lane change, oscillation and braking metrics.

Operational Coordination and Execution: Work with diverse teams across autonomy, operations and core engineering to understand AV performance in specific environments, under specific conditions for the purpose of evaluating options. This will involve coordinating multiple teams and workstreams on a tight timeframe through multiple iterations.

Communicating with Executives: As part of the Motional process there will be multiple iterations of executive review where you will be required to communicate a range of information from technical performance, RCA, through to different execution options. Presentations will need to be both factual and data driven along with providing insight of what the numbers mean.

Decisive Decision Making: Real time decision making of day to day events based on preparatory work and data analysis that can be leveraged to address environmental conditions that are experienced on any given day.

Implement Procedures and Practices: Design and Implement best practices for on road experience evaluation that can be followed and repeated by the engineering and operational teams.

Documentation and Knowledge Sharing: Create clear and concise documentation for consumption by all parties involved in on road performance evaluation. Share knowledge and best practices with the wider operational and engineering teams.

Staying Current with AV Engineering Technologies: Continuously learn and evaluate new technologies and methodologies relevant to autonomous vehicles and data engineering.

What We're Looking For

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience working with autonomous solutions.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Robotics, or a related field. A Master's degree is a plus.
  • Strong statistics background and data analysis skills used to determine performance in complex environments.
  • The ability to understand complex technology stacks and how individual parts of the stack impact overall system performance.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly in the context of complex system performance evaluation.
  • Executive presence such that you can work directly with the C suite, customers and investors.
  • Composed and thoughtful decision making in high pressure situations
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to professional execution of all activities focusing on the quality and accuracy of data presented, the customer experience and Motionals progress as an AV company..
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, continuous delivery environment.

Bonus Points (not required)

  • Experience working with autonomous vehicle sensor data (e.g., LiDAR, camera, radar).
  • Familiarity with simulation environments and data generated from AV simulations.
  • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Looker) for presenting performance metrics.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis and machine learning techniques relevant to performance evaluation.
  • Experience with real-time data processing and streaming technologies.

Success Metrics

  • Successful design and execution of key autonomous vehicles on road experience evaluation.
  • Clear communication and expectation setting of the processes and execution of activities associated with on road experience activities.
  • Improvement in the efficiency and effectiveness of AV performance evaluation processes.
  • Timely and accurate delivery of data and insights to executives and AV development teams associated with critical time sensitive on road performance.
  • Contribution to the overall advancement and safety of our autonomous vehicle technology.

Safe Remote Job Search Tips

Verify Employer Thoroughly

Research the company's identity thoroughly before applying. Check for a professional website with contacts, active social media, and LinkedIn profiles. Verify details across platforms and look for reviews on Glassdoor or Trustpilot to confirm legitimacy.

Never Pay to Get a Job

Legitimate employers never require payment for applications, training, background checks, or equipment. Always reject upfront payment requests or demands for bank details, even if they claim it's for purchasing necessary work gear on your behalf.

Safeguard Your Personal Information

Protect sensitive data like SSN, bank details, or ID copies. Share this only after accepting a formal, written job offer. Ensure it's submitted via a secure company system or portal, never through insecure channels like standard email attachments.

Scrutinize Communication & Interviews

Watch for communication red flags: poor grammar, generic emails (@gmail), vague details, or undue pressure. Be highly suspicious of interviews held only via text or chat apps; legitimate companies typically use video or phone calls.

Beware of Unrealistic Offers

If an offer's salary or benefits seem unrealistically high for the work involved, be cautious. Research standard pay for similar roles. Offers that appear 'too good to be true' are often scams designed to lure you into providing information or payment.

Insist on a Formal Contract

Always secure and review a formal, written job offer or employment contract before starting work or sharing final personal details. Ensure it clearly defines your role, compensation, key terms, and conditions to avoid misunderstandings or scams.
