Job Description
At Propel, we’re on a mission to make it easier for low-income Americans to access and manage government benefits. Our app, used by over 5 million families monthly, helps users navigate financial challenges and save money.
All of our users deserve first-class experiences in their daily interactions with the social safety net and financial services, and too often, tech leaves this population behind. We're a passionate team of 100 Propellers – all working towards a vision where all Americans can make it through every month with dignity and abundance.
We’re looking for a high-craft Product Designer to join our benefits team, reporting into our VP of Design. This person will lead end-to-end feature development, improvements, and maintenance for our core EBT balance checking experience used by millions of Americans each month. They’ll collaborate with product, engineering, and other cross-functional partners to shape strategy, set goals, design experiments, and define long-term vision.
What you’ll do:
- Own and lead design for our core EBT balance checking experience — from high-level strategy to hands-on execution, delivering elegant, practical, and accessible solutions.
- Translate product goals, user needs, and business insights into clear, thoughtful design decisions across the entire product development lifecycle.
- Help run user research and synthesize insights to uncover opportunities, validate solutions, and ensure our work is grounded in real needs.
- Partner closely with cross-functional teams (Product, Engineering, Research, and Marketing) to shape roadmaps, scope features, and iterate quickly.
- Contribute to and evolve our design system (Citrus) while advocating for craft and consistency across the product, along with other internal design projects.
What you need:
- 5+ years of experience designing and shipping high-quality, mobile-centric products in complex domains
- Proven ability to lead projects independently from discovery through delivery — especially in fast-paced, ambiguous environments
- A deep love for craft and detail — you obsess over visuals, interactions, and polish that make products feel exceptional
- You can independently explore and develop solutions from concept to execution, with little direction or structured processes
- Skilled at using both data and user research — driven by curiosity and empathy — to inform impactful, user-centered design decisions
- Strong product instincts with the ability to balance user needs, product goals, and business outcomes
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills— You can tell stories that inspire, drive alignment across teams, and clearly articulate your design decisions
- Strong track record of building trusted partnerships across product, engineering, research, and content teams
- Comfortable prototyping ideas using tools like Figma, Replit, Cursor, or something similar
- A big plus: Background in financial products, government benefits, healthcare, or other regulated industries.
At Propel, you'll enjoy:
- Meaningful work and a strong, shared sense of mission with a passionate and world-class team
- Remote-friendly work environment with a dog-friendly office in Downtown Brooklyn
- 20 days of PTO and unlimited sick days
- 4% 401K match
- $10k lifetime spend towards Carrot Fertility
- Excellent Medical, Dental and Vision options
- Other health and mental health focused benefits and perks
- Propel builds compensation bands referencing the 75th percentile of compensation for companies like us. Expected compensation for the role as scoped is $130,000 - $170,000 and will be based on how a candidate matches to our internal leveling guide.
Additional Considerations:
- We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team, and welcome applicants from all backgrounds and abilities.
- We're currently accepting applications from the states we have an established entity, which includes California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.
- Background Check Requirement: For roles with access to confidential employee or customer information, a background check may be conducted following a conditional offer. All background checks are handled in accordance with applicable laws, including the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).

Over 5 million families each month use Propel to seamlessly manage their government benefits (programs like SNAP, commonly known as food stamps) and save and earn money. Verify Employer Thoroughly
Research the company's identity thoroughly before applying. Check for a professional website with contacts, active social media, and LinkedIn profiles. Verify details across platforms and look for reviews on Glassdoor or Trustpilot to confirm legitimacy.
Never Pay to Get a Job
Legitimate employers never require payment for applications, training, background checks, or equipment. Always reject upfront payment requests or demands for bank details, even if they claim it's for purchasing necessary work gear on your behalf.
Safeguard Your Personal Information
Protect sensitive data like SSN, bank details, or ID copies. Share this only after accepting a formal, written job offer. Ensure it's submitted via a secure company system or portal, never through insecure channels like standard email attachments.
Scrutinize Communication & Interviews
Watch for communication red flags: poor grammar, generic emails (@gmail), vague details, or undue pressure. Be highly suspicious of interviews held only via text or chat apps; legitimate companies typically use video or phone calls.
Beware of Unrealistic Offers
If an offer's salary or benefits seem unrealistically high for the work involved, be cautious. Research standard pay for similar roles. Offers that appear 'too good to be true' are often scams designed to lure you into providing information or payment.
Insist on a Formal Contract
Always secure and review a formal, written job offer or employment contract before starting work or sharing final personal details. Ensure it clearly defines your role, compensation, key terms, and conditions to avoid misunderstandings or scams.
