The Setup Ops team is responsible for getting new customers to their first payroll run with Check’s partner businesses. You will excel in this role as a fearless self-starter and payroll nerd!

For this role, we are seeking a setup project manager with payroll implementation expertise, an entrepreneurial mindset, and a high degree of ownership.

In this role, you will:

  • Manage multiple setup projects (i.e. payroll implementations) simultaneously, across a variety of partner businesses and previous payroll systems.
  • Be responsible for the timely and accurate delivery of projects, holding a high quality bar for yourself and your team.
  • Collaborate with your team and cross-functionally to create and improve processes, process documentation, and tooling.
  • Provide customer service via tickets, email, and phone/video directly to both partners building payroll businesses on Check and to companies in the process of joining those partner platforms.
  • Drive operational efficiency, meeting SLAs to ensure seamless company onboarding.
  • Provide direct assistance to outsourcing teams and customers dealing with complex payroll scenarios identified during the setup process.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with outsourcing partners, overseeing setup projects to accurate, successful completion.

Many backgrounds could fit this role, but ideal candidates will have some or all of the following:

  • 3+ years of payroll implementation/account management experience with a particular focus on enterprise-level account management
  • Proficiency in Excel
  • Comfortable with learning new technologies
  • Skillset in creative problem-solving and data interpretation through the application of payroll knowledge and mathematical concepts
  • Experienced project manager, capable of managing multiple complex projects to timely completion
  • Strong focus on partners and customers, with excellent communication skills in both verbal and written formats.
  • Comfortable in highly cross-functional and geographically distributed environments, with a track record of collaborative work with Partner Success and R&D teams.
  • A friendly and helpful attitude in all interactions with teammates and customers
  • Experience working with outsourced teams
  • Willingness and ability to attend our annual 3-day company offsite in the spring

The Check team is distributed across the US and we have offices in New York City and San Francisco. While we welcome remote work, we believe time together in person is valuable and important. We offer ample opportunities and encourage employees to attend team offsites, events, and hackathons a couple of times a year! We expect all employees to be willing to attend our annual 3-day company offsite in the spring.

For our in-office and hybrid employees, our offices are open all week. We provide meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the team hosts regular happy hours, game nights, etc.

What we offer:

For full-time employees, Check offers company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, short-term/long-term disability, and basic life insurance coverage, effective on their first day of work. We also provide stock options, flexible PTO and sick leave, 16 weeks of fully paid parental leave for all new parents, flexible return-to-work, 10 annual holidays, a 401k retirement plan, and a $100 monthly stipend for home internet and mobile phone expenses.

Safe Remote Job Search Tips

Verify Employer Thoroughly

Research the company's identity thoroughly before applying. Check for a professional website with contacts, active social media, and LinkedIn profiles. Verify details across platforms and look for reviews on Glassdoor or Trustpilot to confirm legitimacy.

Never Pay to Get a Job

Legitimate employers never require payment for applications, training, background checks, or equipment. Always reject upfront payment requests or demands for bank details, even if they claim it's for purchasing necessary work gear on your behalf.

Safeguard Your Personal Information

Protect sensitive data like SSN, bank details, or ID copies. Share this only after accepting a formal, written job offer. Ensure it's submitted via a secure company system or portal, never through insecure channels like standard email attachments.

Scrutinize Communication & Interviews

Watch for communication red flags: poor grammar, generic emails (@gmail), vague details, or undue pressure. Be highly suspicious of interviews held only via text or chat apps; legitimate companies typically use video or phone calls.

Beware of Unrealistic Offers

If an offer's salary or benefits seem unrealistically high for the work involved, be cautious. Research standard pay for similar roles. Offers that appear 'too good to be true' are often scams designed to lure you into providing information or payment.

Insist on a Formal Contract

Always secure and review a formal, written job offer or employment contract before starting work or sharing final personal details. Ensure it clearly defines your role, compensation, key terms, and conditions to avoid misunderstandings or scams.
