Job Description
Food has lost its soul to modern convenience. And with it, has lost the power to nourish, inspire, and connect us. So in 2018, CookUnity was founded as the first-of-its-kind platform that connects the world with the source of truly great food: chefs. Today, CookUnity delivers 35 million meals a year from the industry’s best chefs to homes all over the country. Fresh. Ready-to-eat. And crafted with the passion that nourishes body and soul.
Unwilling to stop there, CookUnity is expanding beyond delivery to become an ever-innovating marketplace focused on our singular mission: empower Chefs to nourish the world.
If that mission has you hungry in more ways than one, you’ve found the right job posting.
About The Team:
You will be joining CookUnity’s Marketplace Zone, which focuses on creating a seamless and scalable platform connecting chefs with consumers. This team tackles high-impact projects ranging from Chef marketing to power monetary transactions within CookUnity’s eCommerce marketplace, including pricing, payments, refunds, promotions, and the order finalization process. We emphasize innovation, reliability, performance, and scalability, working closely with cross-functional teams including Product, Design, and Operations to deliver world-class experiences for chefs and customers.
The Role:
We're looking for a Staff Performance Engineer to join our team, a dynamic role that will see you driving performance improvements across multiple critical areas of our platform. You'll be instrumental in optimizing how chefs showcase their culinary creations and how we handle all monetary transactions, from pricing and payments to refunds and promotions. This role involves working on the Server-Driven UI (SDUI) service within our Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) architecture, as well as developing and maintaining backend services and databases.
As part of a cross-functional team, you will collaborate closely with product managers, mobile/web engineers, and designers. This is a unique opportunity to make a significant impact by diving deep into our tech stack to identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, ensuring a seamless and highly efficient experience for our chefs and customers alike.
Please note that only candidates based in Latin America will be considered for this role.
Responsibilities:
- Independently identify, diagnose, and resolve complex performance issues across the full stack.
- Design and implement scalable and high-performance solutions for critical systems, including chef marketing infrastructure, payment gateways, and order processing.
- Establish robust performance monitoring, alerting, and reporting mechanisms. Analyze performance data to uncover trends, predict future bottlenecks, and proactively recommend improvements.
- Conduct in-depth code reviews, providing expert guidance on performance best practices, efficient algorithms, and optimal data structures to engineering teams.
- Collaborate with engineering and product teams on capacity planning and load testing to ensure the platform can handle increasing traffic and transaction volumes.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Finance, and BizOps teams to translate business requirements into robust engineering solutions.
- Act as a subject matter expert in performance engineering, mentoring junior engineers and fostering a culture of performance awareness and excellence across the organization.
- Evaluate and introduce new technologies, frameworks, AI adoptions that improve our technical stack and development velocity.
Minimum Requirements:
- 8+ years of experience in frontend and backend development, with expertise in Kotlin or Node, React, Next.js, and SQL databases.
- Proven experience in architecting and scaling complex backend systems in a high-growth, fast-paced environment.
- Strong knowledge of distributed systems, service-oriented architecture, and event-driven architecture.
- Deep understanding of system performance and scalability best practices.
- Experience developing and maintaining front-end applications with React, Next.js, and GraphQL.
- Proven ability to translate complex, ambiguous requirements into clear, actionable plans that drive alignment and timely delivery.
- Advanced English communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate complex ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated experience in mentoring and guiding engineers.
Preferred Requirements:
- Knowledge of AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform, and cloud infrastructure.
- Familiarity with observability tools like DataDog and logging frameworks.
- Proficiency with leveraging AI Coding tools in day to day development (Cursor, Windsurf, or similar).
- Experience working in eCommerce, marketplace, or fintech environments.
- Experience with pricing algorithms, promotions engines, or dynamic pricing models.

Verify Employer Thoroughly
Research the company's identity thoroughly before applying. Check for a professional website with contacts, active social media, and LinkedIn profiles. Verify details across platforms and look for reviews on Glassdoor or Trustpilot to confirm legitimacy.
Never Pay to Get a Job
Legitimate employers never require payment for applications, training, background checks, or equipment. Always reject upfront payment requests or demands for bank details, even if they claim it's for purchasing necessary work gear on your behalf.
Safeguard Your Personal Information
Protect sensitive data like SSN, bank details, or ID copies. Share this only after accepting a formal, written job offer. Ensure it's submitted via a secure company system or portal, never through insecure channels like standard email attachments.
Scrutinize Communication & Interviews
Watch for communication red flags: poor grammar, generic emails (@gmail), vague details, or undue pressure. Be highly suspicious of interviews held only via text or chat apps; legitimate companies typically use video or phone calls.
Beware of Unrealistic Offers
If an offer's salary or benefits seem unrealistically high for the work involved, be cautious. Research standard pay for similar roles. Offers that appear 'too good to be true' are often scams designed to lure you into providing information or payment.
Insist on a Formal Contract
Always secure and review a formal, written job offer or employment contract before starting work or sharing final personal details. Ensure it clearly defines your role, compensation, key terms, and conditions to avoid misunderstandings or scams.
