Job Description

Quick Take: Axios is a growth-stage startup dedicated to providing trustworthy, award-winning news content in an audience-first format. We are hiring a Breaking News Reporter.

Why it Matters: The Breaking News Reporter role allows early-career journalists to put their journalism skills and instincts into practice by writing for our breaking news desk. You’ll report and aggregate breaking stories that are worthy of our readers' time and occasionally report enterprise stories for Axios' newsletters.

The Details: The Breaking News Reporter will work closely with our team of editors to determine appropriate breaking news stories to feature on Axios.com. You will also have the opportunity to collaborate with beat reporters across the Axios newsroom on stories that intersect with our various coverage areas and on items for newsletters. Ideal candidates should embody a passion for Axios and Smart Brevity, an entrepreneurial spirit and possess the following skills:

  • Exceptional news and editorial judgment and instincts
  • Ability to write clear, concise, accurate copy
  • Experience aggregating news stories and working in a breaking news environment
  • Outstanding work ethic and comfort in a very fast-paced environment
  • A reader of a wide variety of news and the ability to advance the daily news cycle forward with story pitches
  • Eager to seek feedback and quick to incorporate feedback to grow and strengthen your skills
  • Strong collaboration skills with journalists across all levels
  • A working knowledge of U.S. politics and media, as well as an interest in political reporting is encouraged and an asset.

Starting salary for this role is in the range of $22/hour - $38/hour and is dependent on numerous factors, including but not limited to location, work experience, and skills. This range does not include other compensation and benefits. Axios' compensation philosophy takes into account cost of labor differentials across the country. Because this is a remote-optional job posting, this salary range takes into account all possible locations within the United States, but candidates will only be eligible for the salary range for their location.
