Job Description

Join Our Journey at Engine

At Engine, we’re revolutionizing work travel. Our modern travel platform isn’t just about booking trips; it’s about transforming how businesses and their teams experience travel. From seamless booking options with top airlines, hotels, and car rental providers to single-invoice billing and flexible trip modifications, we make travel not only easier to manage but also enjoyable. Backed by powerhouse investors like Telescope Partners, Blackstone, Elefund, and Permira, we’re growing fast—and we want you to be part of it.

This is a critical leadership role for a tax professional ready to build a corporate tax function in a dynamic, high-growth environment. As the Senior Manager of Corporate Tax & Provision, you will own all aspects of our domestic income tax accounting and compliance. You will be responsible for establishing a tax provision process under ASC 740, managing our federal and state compliance obligations, and serving as a key strategic advisor to financial leadership. This is a builder's role, perfect for a hands-on leader who wants to make a significant impact by creating scalable tax infrastructure from the ground up.

Your Mission:
As part of the Engine team, you’ll play a vital role in an environment where innovation meets collaboration. Here’s what you’ll take charge of:

  • Tax Provision (ASC 740):
    • Lead the quarterly and annual income tax provision process, including calculating the global effective tax rate (ETR), current and deferred tax expense, and uncertain tax positions (FIN 48).
    • Prepare and review detailed analyses of all deferred tax assets and liabilities, including assessing the need for valuation allowances against assets like Net Operating Losses (NOLs) and R&D tax credits.
    • Own the preparation of tax-related financial statement footnotes and disclosures for internal and external reporting.
    • Partner with the Controller's team to ensure the tax provision is seamlessly integrated into the financial close process.
  • Compliance & Operations:
    • Manage the preparation and review of federal and multi-state corporate income tax returns, ensuring accuracy and timely filing.
    • Oversee the calculation and payment of federal and state estimated taxes and extensions.
    • Manage all federal and state income tax audits and notices, serving as the primary point of contact with tax authorities.
    • Assist with indirect tax compliance preparation and review, including Sales & Use Tax, Lodger's Tax, and Marketplace Facilitator obligations.
    • Develop and execute a strategic roadmap for tax technology, focusing on automating manual workflows and improving data integrity.
    • Partner closely with Engineering and Data teams to establish robust data pipelines, ensuring tax systems have access to accurate and timely information.
  • Process, Controls & Strategy:
    • Design, implement, and document scalable tax processes and SOX-compliant internal controls over the income tax accounting cycle.
    • Evaluate, select, and lead the implementation of tax provision software and other technology to drive efficiency and accuracy.
    • Partner with FP&A to support financial modeling and ETR forecasting.
    • Advise on the income tax implications of significant business activities, including M&A, new initiatives, and corporate structuring.
    • Research and document technical tax issues and their impact on the company's financial statements.

What You’ll Bring to Engine:
We’re looking for someone who’s ready to make an impact and grow alongside us:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of progressive corporate tax experience, with a strong combination of public accounting (Big 4 preferred) and industry experience.
  • Extensive, in-depth, and hands-on knowledge of U.S. GAAP ASC 740
  • Proven experience managing federal and multi-state corporate income tax compliance for complex organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and improve processes in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent analytical, technical, and communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex tax matters to leadership.

Bonus Points For:

  • Masters in Taxation or JD/LLM.
  • Experience in a high-growth technology or e-commerce company.
  • Deep expertise in managing federal R&D tax credits and NOLs (including Section 382 analysis).

Safe Remote Job Search Tips

Verify Employer Thoroughly

Research the company's identity thoroughly before applying. Check for a professional website with contacts, active social media, and LinkedIn profiles. Verify details across platforms and look for reviews on Glassdoor or Trustpilot to confirm legitimacy.

Never Pay to Get a Job

Legitimate employers never require payment for applications, training, background checks, or equipment. Always reject upfront payment requests or demands for bank details, even if they claim it's for purchasing necessary work gear on your behalf.

Safeguard Your Personal Information

Protect sensitive data like SSN, bank details, or ID copies. Share this only after accepting a formal, written job offer. Ensure it's submitted via a secure company system or portal, never through insecure channels like standard email attachments.

Scrutinize Communication & Interviews

Watch for communication red flags: poor grammar, generic emails (@gmail), vague details, or undue pressure. Be highly suspicious of interviews held only via text or chat apps; legitimate companies typically use video or phone calls.

Beware of Unrealistic Offers

If an offer's salary or benefits seem unrealistically high for the work involved, be cautious. Research standard pay for similar roles. Offers that appear 'too good to be true' are often scams designed to lure you into providing information or payment.

Insist on a Formal Contract

Always secure and review a formal, written job offer or employment contract before starting work or sharing final personal details. Ensure it clearly defines your role, compensation, key terms, and conditions to avoid misunderstandings or scams.
